about

Fig Tree
(Erica Johnson)

This song is written from three different perspectives: the fig tree, the disciples and Jesus. It describes a scene shortly after the Triumphal Entry where Jesus walks with His disciples and uses a simple encounter with a fig tree to teach a profound truth (Matthew 21:18-22).

We wanted to explore these three perspectives and emphasize the feeling and role of each character in the story. Even though the fig tree doesn’t really have feelings, we imagined its anticipation to bear fruit. The disciples were amazed at Jesus’ cursing of the fig tree and its withering (“How did it wither up so fast? I don’t understand.”). We chose to musically build up the song during Jesus’ part, emphasizing the most important element of this story: having faith in God.

Fig Tree
Words by Erica Johnson and Justin Rose; Music by: Justin Rose

VERSE 1:
In the morning the sun’s so bright, I’m just here standing
With the dew on my leaves from the night, watching and waiting
For the fruit I will bear to start appearing,
Cause now I’m still bare.

VERSE 2:
Jesus was real hungry, He ain’t eat all morning.
So He went up to the tree, but He found nothing.
He said, “Tree you will be forever cursed.”
And it withered right there.

CHORUS:
We were all amazed.
How did it wither up so fast? I don’t understand.
How come it died so quick? Oh no, it doesn’t make sense.

BRIDGE:
I tell you the truth you’ve gotta have faith.
Don’t doubt me and you’ll do amazing things.
Tell that mountain to jump into the sea
And it will happen if your faith is in me.
Tell that mountain to jump into the sea
And it will happen if your faith is in me.
It will happen if your faith is in me.
It will happen if your faith is in me.
